Everytime we visit Salt Lake City, one of our go-to places is Temple Square. It is beautiful at any time of the year, and my kids love it. They love being on the grounds and seeing all of the beautiful flowers. They love going through the visitors’ centers and seeing all of the exhibits. They loving touring the buildings. They love talking to all of the missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Recently, we had to be in Salt Lake for a meeting for Mommy Crusader. We all went, and while she was at her meeting, we went to Temple Square to pass the time.
Temple Square is located right in the heart of downtown Salt Lake. Everything in the city is built around it. Parking is an issue. There are no free parking spots anywhere near Temple Square. We parked underneath the City Creek Shopping Center across the street. The easiest way to get into this parking lot is make sure that you are headed West towards temple square on South Temple. You can then enter the parking garage through an entrance that is right in the middle of the road. We were able to spend three hours on temple square and we paid only 2 dollars for parking.
The first place that my kiddos like to go in Temple Square is the North Visitor Center. It is located northwest of the temple, right in the corner of Temple Square. They love it, because of all of the interactive exhibits there. There is a large 3-d map of Jerusalem with lights that light up explaining events in Jesus Christ’s life. There are multiple rooms for viewing videos. There are many life-size statues. And, the crowing jewel of it all, is the Christus statue at the top. It is a very peaceful and wonderful spot.
After visiting the North Visitor’s Center, we have to visit the South Visitor’s Center. The South Visitor’s Center is located just south of the temple. This Visitor’s Center is smaller, but also has many interactive exhibits. My children enjoyed looking at a cut-out showing the inside rooms of the temple. They enjoyed a large doll-house like exhibit showing many different videos that the church has made. And, they enjoyed talking with all of the missionaries.
We then went to see the actual temple itself. The temple is huge! We weren’t able to go inside, because it is open only to worthy members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Days Saints who are twelve or older, so my entourage can’t enter, but we were able to touch it and see it. It’s a marvelous building, with amazing architecture.
We also spent quite a bit of time on the grounds of the temple, taking pictures. The flower beds on Temple Square are heated, so the flowers are always blooming. The grounds are immaculately taken care of. There is a large-beautiful mirror pool that is great for pictures. I wish that I was a better photographer, because I wasn’t capable of catching the beauty that is Temple Square.
Whenever you happen to be in Salt Lake City, UT, be sure to take time to visit Temple Square. It is awe-inspiring and is a place that you and your kids will love.
