In the Road on the Map, I wrote that our family had been looking for an accessible High Uinta lake. Well, we finally found one. This one is actually right off of a main highway as well. There is a highway between Heber City and Park City called Mirror Lake Highway. Go ahead and follow it up. This road will continue all the way up along the west edge of the Uinta Mountains, and connect into Evanston, Wyoming. There are LOTS of little ponds and lakes along this route. We went to Mirror Lake.
Mirror Lake is a very popular fishing spot. It is the west side of the Highline Trail that goes through the Uinta Mountain range. It also has a beautiful campground and picnic area. One of the great things about Mirror Lake is that it has a trail that goes all the way around it. Every inch of shoreline is available to fishermen.
We arrived at Mirror Lake in the afternoon/evening. We unpacked our supplies and headed out around the lake. We didn’t go very far until we found a beautiful area right near a cove with a picnic table. We spread our kids out around the shoreline, and started them fishing.
We talked to several other fishermen, and they said that they were having luck using Powerbait. My kiddos have decided they don’t like using Powerbait, because it means they have to be patient and wait for the fish to bite. So, we probably didn’t have as much luck as we should have.
We set all of the kids up with various lures (spinner/spoons/plastic worms), and got them started. Fairly quickly, we caught a small rainbow trout on a spinner. Later, we caught another rainbow trout on the same spinner. Those were the only two fish we caught. It wasn’t as great of a fishing trip as we had hoped for, but the kids had fun, and that is what matters.
The next time we head up to Mirror Lake, this is what we will do:
We will make sure we have plenty of time. It was a long enough drive that we didn’t get enough time to fish because we arrived there too late.
We will make sure that at least some of our lines are using Powerbait. Several other fishermen were surprised that we only caught two fish.
We will plan on cooking out at the lake. They had beautiful picnicking/camping sites.
We will plan on taking time to visit several of the other lakes in the vicinity.
We will probably camp out. It is just beautiful.
There was an access fee into the Wasatch National Forest — it was only $6 for our car. I don’t know if camping costs more.
So, if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, spend some nice family time, and go fishing in a beautiful high uinta lake, head up to Mirror Lake. It is gorgeous, and very nicely put together to make it family-friendly.
